According to the business journal Nikkei Asia – a global survey of app downloads, TikTok has moved to the number one spot in 2020 overtaking Facebook as the most downloaded application on smartphones’ OS.
The Chinese short-video app topped the social media giant – Facebook, which has 4 out 10 social applications in the listings. Despite its bans in various major international markets, such as India and Pakistan, the short-video platform is still on the top of the list. Interestingly, the popular Chinese app has impacted many US-based smart applications and become the number one video-sharing platform.
Out of 10 most download apps, 7 were developed and owned by US citizens, among the seven most downloaded apps, 4 were owned by Facebook alone. The four apps include as
- Facebook messenger
- Facebook’s original app
To recall, Nikkei Asia first conducted its survey in 2018, in which TikTok was the fourth place under Facebook. Moreover, in 2019, the China-owned app placed at number 2 after the number of downloads on operating systems (Android and iOS).
TikTok also secured its number one position in terms of downloads in the whole USA. On the other hand, the Chinese version of TikTok – Douyin, also maintained its top spot in China. Interestingly, in Asia excluding China, the app still remained in second place following Facebook, according to Nikkei Asia reports.
As per the reports from various researchers and analysts, the short video sharing app gained its boost especially during the pandemic (first wave of Covid-19). Therefore, throughout the pandemic, it was the trending app in South America, Europe, and the USA.
The users of this app tend to enjoy the Dubsmash version of it where they can only lip the lyrics of various songs and music. During that tenure, the company also tested to monetize its platform so that the content creators can make money while using the application.
Nikkei Asia didn’t provide the exact total number of downloads of each of the 10 most downloaded apps around the globe. Therefore, only official Stores i.e. Android and iOS provide the data for the total number of downloads of each app.
