Snapdragon 855 SoC with 5G, new AI Engine, Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor unveiled

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 855 SoC with 5G, 4th gen AI Engine, Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor and more.

Snapdragon 855 has been in the news for quite some time now. According to rumours, it has been in production since June, 2018. On 4th December, 2018, Qualcomm unveiled their flagship Snapdragon 855 SoC. Snapdragon 855 comes with the X50 5G Modem, 4th gen AI Engine and an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. SD855 will show up on smartphones in the first half of 2019, hopefully.

A few details about the new SoC was revealed at the event in Hawaii. Qualcomm will provide more details about SD855 at the upcoming Snapdragon Technology Summit in Hawaii.

4 Snapdragon 855 Features you should know

Though the knowledge about the Chip is minimal, some features revealed hint at what we could expect in 2019 smartphones.

1. 5G NR with Snapdragon X50 Modem

Snapdragon 855 will come coupled with the SD X50 modem for native 5G support. Major carriers worldwide are preparing for 5G’s launch in 2019. Qualcomm said, Samsung would launch their 5G phones with Verizon in the first half of 2019. On paper, 5G will be about 100 times faster than the current 4G (LTE).

2. 4th gen Qualcomm AI Engine

With the latest chip comes the latest AI engine. This is said to be three times faster than the previous generation – Snapdragon 845. But, based on benchmarks, it seems SD 855 has a long way to go compared to iPhone’s A12 Bionic.

3. World’s first Computer vision ISP

The new AI Engine also paves the way for very new features. Snapdragon 855 will be the world’s first SoC with Computer Vision (CV) ISP. So, it will be able to recognise faces and objects better with better video capture features. I already am excited about the new Camera features this could bring.

4. Qualcomm 3D Sonic Fingerprint Sensor

A Qualcomm Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor will be coupled with the SD855 SoC. This is taunted to be the fastest and the most accurate inspite of layers of contaminants (dust) on the screen. This makes sense, since an Ultrasonic Sensor uses sound, rather than light as on an Optical sensor (like OnePlus 6T).

According to the latest render leaks of Galaxy S10 Plus, it features an Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensor and the launch is expected in February, 2019. So, there’s a huge chance that the phone in the US will have SD 855 under the hood.
