Android fans usually love guessing Android version names. Before the launch of Android Pie on Pixel phones, people had guessed many names for Android 9 including Pancake, Pizza, Pie and even Pineapple. The Android Subreddit is having a discussion as to whether the next Android i.e., Android 10 will be named Android Quindim?
Android Etymology: How does Google name Android versions?
Everyone knows this by now. Google names Android versions with names of food items and in an alphabetical order. Here are the names of all Android versions yet:-
- 1.5: Cupcake
- 1.6: Donut
- 2.0 – 2.1: Eclair
- 2.2 – 2.2.3: Froyo
- 2.3 – 2.3.7: Gingerbread
- 3.0 – 3.2.6: Honeycomb
- 4.0 – 4.0.4: Ice Cream Sandwich
- 4.4 – 4.4.4: KitKat
- 5.0 – 5.1.1: Lollipop
- 6.0 – 6.0.1: Marshmallow
- 7.0 – 7.1.2: Nougat
- 8.0 – 8.1: Oreo
- 9: Pie
Google has always used the name of a food item including dishes and even branded chocolates including KitKat. So, Google is probably looking to name Android 10 with an eatable that starts with Q.
Android Quindim: What’s “Quindim?”
Quindim is the name of a Brazilian baked desert made with sugar, egg and ground coconut. Though interesting, doesn’t seem like a name Google would go for. From the beginning, Google has chosen names that are easy to pronounce. Even though some are long, like Ice Cream Sandwich, they can be easily remembered and pronounced. Till now, the names of Android versions have been commonly available food items. But, it’s too soon to say, because Google’s next big OS is called Fuchsia OS.
Expected names for Android 10
Though Android 10 is almost an year away or almost another Google Pixel away, there’s no harm in making a few wild guesses of what Android 10 will be called. Here’s a list of a few names Redditors think Google might consider:-
All these names are those of Latin American and Arabic dishes. But, there’s one that stood out. Here it is.
Though naming Android versions with names of food items is a tradition, Android X seems good. For those who don’t understand the ‘X’ denotes 10 in Roman Numerals. So, Android 10 could be named Android X. This would be similar to how Apple named their 10th iPhone iPhone X. Also check out the new iPhone XS models and XR.
